Assassins cast member Patrick Livingston, interviewed by Adam Jackman, July 28, 2006 in New York City

Ok, so --
Are you interviewing other people?

No. I'm just building a fan site for Patrick Livingston.
There's no need. First off, it's already built. Are you interviewing anyone else?

Why?
I just wanted to know if you're interviewing...

Katie?
Katie.

None of your business.
What does she know?

I haven't talked to her. Should we do some other time?
No, the only other day I have is Sunday, and Sunday's bad, 'cause then you've got the crowds, and you have to deal with Jesus.

Then it's on. Was Assassins the first time you worked with Adam Jackman?
Well, i worked in Steel Magnolias as his props assistant. As I recall, he was in charge of hot dogs and Postum, and that's pretty much how all of our productions ended.

How did that lead to your role in Assassins?
I think he saw something in me, in my backstage. Or my frontstage. I think he felt there was some murderous... Actually, I don't thinkhe had anything to do with me being in Steel Magnolias. I think I just usurped someone else's position, which is what I usually do.

And in Assassins, any usurping there?
No, I got that, I believe, because I was the shortest person who could hit an A. Actually, it was one of the most scrutinous audition processes ever, with that panel of judges. It was a lot to deal wth, so I made it my first and only-ever team audition. I ran in the room, jumped o a chair and sang "Sun and Moon" from Miss Saigon with Stacy Emmons. Then I strutted out the door and peed myself.

What do you mean, a panel of judges?
He had an entire panel. His fight coordinator was part of the process, his executive producer... Not to mention he wasn't even directing the show. He was producing and there were two directors, one of whom had to audition for her own show and didn't even get that good a part.

You mean Katie Thompson, who played the Proprietor?
They were going to make Adam the proprietor, but unfortunately, no one could play the lead, so Adam stepped in.

So, scandal from the start. What about the language in the show?
Yes, well, we were told not to say "blow jobs" from the stage. At least, I was told, but i could have just been told incidentally.

Why would you --
I believe it was a cast rule. Adam was very diplomatic and didn't want to single anyone out. It was new to Utah Valley. It did cause quite a ruckus. There was constant administrative involvement. They were concerned about the safety and the virtue of the actors.

Why safety?
I remember while Adam was trying to hang Corey Anderson, the administration made its presence known. I was pretty sure all along they could hang him without killing him.

Would you have done it, let them hang you from a hangman's noose?
I'm sure of it, absolutely, but I was never considered. I was only electrocuted. But, due to budget constraints, it was more like me sitting in the chair with flashing lights. We just turned on and off the stage lights.

How did it look, from where you sat in the middle of it all?
I have no idea. I was focused on maintaining the integrity of the A note that I was sustaining. It took a mixture of spasms and a vibrator to really nail that.

How did the cast react to all the controversy?
We all rallied around it. It created unity among the cast. Our "Squeaky Fromme" wrote an article in the school paper that really summed up cast sentiment.

Which was?
"Kiss My Assassins." Standing behind our filth.

And how do you feel about it now, twelve years later?
I stand behind my filth.
